About

The posts found here are taken directly from A FORTY-NINER’S DIARY. Written from March 1849 to June 1851 by Isaac Sherwood Halsey, it was transcribed and edited by his grandson, Frank Sherwood Halsey in 1978.  Every effort has been made to preserve the punctuation, grammar and spelling as found in the original text.

The original diary resides at the University of California, Berkeley in The Bancroft Library.  My grandfather, Frank Sherwood Halsey, made a gift of the diary in May 1979 to the school.

Our family wanted to make the information found in these documents more readily available to the public, and agreed in 2016 to publish digital versions of the 1978 transcription and associated documents on this website.

I hope you enjoy reading what Isaac wrote.

Regards,

David Sherwood Halsey
